Mindfulness is the catalyst in transforming the current, outdated, reductionist and scientific-materialist western worldview towards a new holistic paradigm that is emerging as the cultivation and expression of spiritual intelligence.

The current view according to scientific materialism defines human beings as composed of atoms, chemicals, and biological structures, where life is devoid of any other purpose and meaning, but engaged in the endless pursuit and accumulation of wealth, prestige, status and materials. The scientific materialist worldview has caused huge damage to the population in the developed world with symptoms of loneliness, alienation, abandonment, internal conflict, aimlessness existence, not to mention the exponential growth in anxiety, depression, stress, self-harm in children and the inevitable result in cases of cancer, diabetes type II, CVD, Parkinsons, the list goes no.

Despite the prevalent materialist worldview, the good news is thats its dying and the collapse in underway right before our eyes. This outdated and destructive paradigm is being superseded by the spiritual intelligence paradigm, as the next stage in the evolution of collective consciousness of humanity.

Mindfulness has enabled people to experience Presence, and recognise while they have a mind (ego), they are not the content of their mind, i.e ego. Mindfulness is the cultivation of Presence, a shift of our identity from object-oriented awareness (Manmukh according to Gurmat) towards subject-orientated awareness (Gurmukh). This has liberated many from the prisons of their conditioning, including their beliefs, self image and automated behavior, towards discovering their authentic sense of self, authenticity.

Authenticity is cultivated through mindfulness. Spiritual intelligence emerges from authenticity. Spiritual intelligence, is the heart of Gurmat. It is the integration of emotional and spiritual intelligence with Presence.

Suffering becomes the medicine, when complacency is the disease
In the first two months of Spring 2017, the UK population has encountered a train of seismic events, each greater than the previous, that have impacted each and everyone in one way or another.
Bombings, knife attacks, elections, leaders and politicians failing and falling before our very eyes, the facade around Brexit, the devastating fire at  Grenfell Tower that has claimed the lives of many people, destroyed families, communities and stunned the nation into stopping!
STOP ! Is the first step to break the automatic pattern and recognise that we have the capacity of awareness and ability to direct it. And what do begin to see
Our lack of awareness, and subsequent ignorance had directed our attention, our focus as manifesting desires which are believed to be our priorities. These priorities tend to focused on wealth, relationships, status in society and communities and possessions. The stark suffering that is being beamed into the hands and screen across the world, have triggered a chain reaction that is growing, from shock to disbelief, which is fast becoming anger, anger towards those that allowed such conditions to prevail, that such a tragedy was just a matter of time.
Our previous priorities has conditioned our states of being, (thoughts, emotions, sensations and motivation) towards objects that have names and forms, that gave rise to emotional feelings, fueled by ever increasing desire for our objects forming attachments that blind us. Our awareness is focused, in fact trapped and confined into a narrow channel to the exclusion of all else. However, the collective human suffering being witnessed so close to home, in one of the richest and secure countries in the world, has slapped the UK population awake!
OBSERVE! This is the second stage, to bring your attention to your thoughts based of the information from your senses, the information, the pictures, the human grief, using all this information to witness, to notice your own response, noticing the discomfort, sitting with the pain, and allow the healing power of compassion to flower, for yourself and others.
BREATHE! Taking some time to breathe, to know the experience of life, to know your ability to create, to do what is “right” for you. Self empowerment
EXPAND! Suffering is the common human thread that each and every one of us wishes to be free from. White we can not healing anyone else, we can begin with ourselves by wishing well for all those we share Existence with. May they be happy, may they be healthy, may they be peaceful, may they be safe .
The UK population has began to awaken to their situation, ignorance is being replace with information, knowledge and understanding. The wonderful acceptance and respect for integrity in Jeremy Corbyn demonstrated the first major wave of awaking, and it was by those not being conditioned and held in mental prisons created, maintained and reinforced by the main stream media, the news papers and major channels.  The Grenfell Tower fire colossal tragedy has left the nation reeling in pain and reflection. Once we wake up to a dream, its very difficult to go back to the dream. The dream is over for the like of Theresa May and those those engineering these dramas in dreams to keep the masses locked in their psycho-prisons.
When ignorance is our disease, suffering wakes us up and becomes the medicine. From the medicine of suffering awakens compassion, medicine for not just us, but for each and every other form that we share this moment of time and space in this ever present Existence.

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behaviour in a given context. the current psychological models (western or modern models) are founded on the works of Freud, Carl Jung, William james, Maslow and Rogers.  These models do not include consciousness, nor the study of consciousness, awareness training or comprehension beyond the ego sense of self.  All in all, these models have been developing for less than 150 years.
Now compare this with traditions such as the Taoists, Buddhists, Hindu and Sikhs, who have studied the nature of the mind, consciousness and practical methods of transcending the egoic sense of self to experience reality directly are through this experience:-
  • We discover our true nature, all psychological and spiritual struggles come to an end.
  • The belief in the existence of a permanent egoic sense of self that needs to compete with all other selves in the world is eliminated from the deepest strata of our minds
  • Our aversion and attraction, hatred and greed, which are based on the false view of self, begin to fade away
  • Anxiety, stress and depression fade and our anxious minds are tamed
  • We begin to see things with perfect understanding
  • We feel a sense of joy
  • The course of our life is seen with serenity
  • We become as natural in our expression as the tree, birds and the sky
  • Total complete freedom from our conditioned sense of self, self sovereignty.
Now compare this to the dominant model of psychology that is beginning to show its limitations in dealing with the stresses of modern lifestyle. The context behind the modern state of affairs helps understand its colonial past.
The British imperial government used a number of dogmas to justify their “God ordained” mission to civilise the non-Western races. Non-Western races were classified as the “Other”, something to be studied, photographed and exhibited.
These dogmas included, that the East was in a desperate need of Western civilisation, that they were incapable of defining themselves, which provided the Western scholars freedom to define the “Other” according to their own terms. Indians were classified as “children” who needed the “Adults”, i.e the British to help them mature into adulthood by civilizing them into the Western worldview. The supposed superiority of Western concepts of knowledge, reality and self led to the uncritical acceptance of western psychological methodologies and concepts by the colonised Indians.
The colonisers’ strategy was to educate the elite into accepting the superiority of Western worldview while defining the indigenous traditions, sciences and psychologies as inferior, primitive and immature. This helped disillusion the early western trained Indian psychologists to abandon their traditional psychological therapies such as meditation, yoga, and tantric healing practices which have to this day proved their effectiveness and stood the test of time.
Psychoanalysis (Western or modern psychological model) was one of the tools used to partially “cure” the affliction of Indianness”. In fact, in 1920’s, Psychoanalytical theory was used to educated the “colonial administrators in dealing with Indians who dared to question British rule”.
The racist colonial attitude has had a last impact on almost all indigenous or “native” psychologies in the world to this day. Western psychology is the second wave colonisation, in which the mind and the body are colonised and in which those colonised attempt to fight their rulers within the psychological limits set by the rulers.
The blind copying of Western psychology, ego-based psychology, replaced the incredibly rich science of consciousness, mind and self. It is only over the past 15 or so year that Indian psychology has begun to emerge from the colonial psychology prison, with the first national seminar on Indian psychology in 2007.
The stage is now set for the highly sophisticated, time tested and life transforming psychologies to emerge from the colonial psychological prison established by the early British colonisers. Mindfulness a key component of Indic psychology, particularly Buddhism has exploded in its application across the West, and now being integrated with Western psychology itself.
Gurmat is the latest non-western psychology which has demonstrated its application in cultivating optimum psycho-spiritual health and well being is now beginning to make its appearance as another complete system for psychological health and more.

The ancient wisdom traditions of Indian civilization have undertaken the most profound examination of the human mind and consciousness.

This book introduces Gurmat, one of the most advanced psycho-spiritual and wellbeing systems to emerge from the east. Its approach addressing human suffering, self-actualisation, self-realisation and self-sovereignty.

Gurmat makes an important contribution to the science of psychological studies, psychophysiology, mental health and provides a perennial form of healing which includes the realisation of the eternal, limitless sacred nature of the Self beyond the confines of the ego-complex (haumai). It complements the health systems of Buddhist psychology or Abidharam, Yoga and Aryuveda.

In contrast to the highly evolved Eastern psychological systems, Western psychology is relatively primitive in its approach to cultivation of psychological health and wellbeing; let alone what lies beyond the ego. The current biomedical model is distorted and incorrect, founded on mind-body separation, without any real understanding of the nature of mind nor consciousness.

Gurmat, provides a refreshing, time tested and subjectively verified  insight into non-eurocentric models of the mind, consciousness and practical approaches to cultivate, maintain and propagate healthier, integrated and purposeful lifestyles.

This book represents a valuable contribution to the science of holism, health and wellness, and will be of great value not only to health care professionals and psychologists, but also to those individuals who are interested in their own evolution and development.

The 10 bulls of Zen, (the OX herder) is remarkable and unique in the history of human consciousness, as not only does it provides a clear and profound process of knowing, recognising and transcending the mind, moreover, the 10 bulls of Zen are applicable across all traditions.
Ancient consciousness based wisdom traditions have used the oxen, bull, elephant, or monkey to symbolise and illustrate the nature of the mind. The Ox can be found in the teachings of various teachers and masters.
Bhagat Kabir, a renowned Indian mystic considers the mind as the bull and meditation as its path.
Man Kar Bail Surath Kar Paiddaa Giaan Gon Bhar Ddaaree ||
My mind is the bull, and meditation is the road; I have filled my packs with spiritual wisdom, and loaded them on the bull. (Bhagat Kabir)
Guru Nanak illustrates our awareness is distracted through the unruly bulls, or senses
Panch Bail Gaddeeaa Dhaeh Dhhaaree ||
Raam Kalaa Nibehai Path Saaree ||
Dhhar Thoottee Gaaddo Sir Bhaar ||
Lakaree Bikhar Jaree Manjh Bhaar ||2||
The five bulls, the senses, pull the wagon of the body around.
Through Existences energy, one’s preserved.
But when the axle breaks, the wagon falls and crashes.
It falls apart, like a pile of logs. ||2|| (Guru Nanak)
In the Taoist tradition, Lao Tzu is seen riding a black Ox, thus illustrating  the taming and riding of the mind, as per the 6th picture of the Ox herder series of pictures.
The Ox (bull) does not just represent the mind (ego-haumai) but also represents Dharma, a life style that integrates cultivating awareness, living by internal ethics beyond social morality and norms as a self-realised and sovereign human being.
The Ox herder is perhaps one of the most valuable and transformational tool that can truly enable individuals to transcend their self-limiting minds and live and engage in life fully. The OX herder provides the organic path for those who have tasted mindfulness and wish to explore beyond mindfulness in to the realms of consciousness.

Trauma can be defined as  a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. An experience in which the individual is impacted physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.  The all too common public atrocities such as the Manchester bombing of concert attendees, the murder of Jo Cox, the indiscriminate killings across the globe in the name of religion, politics or democracy are all designed to traumatize those who are exposed to these horrors.

The continuous 24/7 wall to wall coverage of the bombing in Manchester has done more harm than good. It has effectively traumatized the whole of the UK and all those who engaged in the mass coverage. The continuous and persistent playing of screaming children, blood covered victims and the all to imminent threats issued through the political mouth pieces do little to reduce the impact of the trauma.

Trauma impact us in a variety of ways, unless trauma is dealt with, it will inevitably affect your behaviour, your thought processes, your emotional state and most importantly, provide the seeds for disease and illness to take root. Trauma has been linked to cancers, Alzheimer’s disease and much more.  Trauma alters our genetics, it contributes to epi-genetic changes.

How does one recover from trauma? For trauma patients, recovery becomes their primary goal, be they the victim, their families and care providers. Recovery does not always mean complete freedom from the effects of post-traumatic stress, but is the ability to live in the present without being overwhelmed by the thoughts and feelings of the past.

It is important to recognise the stages of trauma and the recovery stages. The stages of trauma can be summarised as follows:-

Stages of Trauma:

1. Shock
2. Disbelief
3. Bargaining
4. Anger
5. Depression
6. Acceptance

Physical impact of trauma

Aches and pains like headaches, backaches, stomach aches
Sudden sweating and/or heart palpitations (fluttering)
Changes in sleep patterns, appetite, interest in sex
Constipation or diarrhea
Nervous  and easily startled by noises or unexpected touch
Susceptible infections
Increased use of alcohol or drugs and/or overeating
Emotional reactions to Trauma
Shock and disbelief
Fear and/or anxiety
Grief, disorientation, denial
Hyper-alertness or hyper vigilance
Irritability, restlessness, outbursts of anger or rage
Emotional swings — like crying and then laughing
Anxiety
Insomnia and/ or nightmares
Flashbacks
Helplessness, panic, feeling out of control
Isolation
Emotional numbing or restricted range of feelings
Self-blame and/or survivor guilt
Suicidal thoughts
Anger
Desire for revenge
Spiritual impact of trauma
Anger towards religion, “God”
Loss in belief system
Loss of compassion
Distrust
Fear
Loss of self
Recovery process – Stage I – Safety and Stabilization

People affected by trauma tend to feel unsafe in their bodies and in their relationships with others. Regaining a sense of safety may take days to weeks with acutely traumatized individuals or months to years

Stage II – Remembrance and Mourning

This task shifts to processing the trauma, putting words and emotions to it and making meaning of it

Stage III – Re-connection and Integration

In this phase there must now be a creation a new sense of self and a new future. This final task involves redefining oneself in the context of meaningful relationships. Through this process, the trauma no longer is a defining and organizing principle is someone’s life. The trauma becomes integrated into their life story but is not the only story that defines them.

Self-compassion is the starting point for recovery, combined with guided mindfulness based therapy, physical activities such as yoga, chi kung, or tai chi can greatly assist in reducing trauma energy held within the physical body.

Mindfulness meditation can greatly assist in our recovery, please find your free guided meditation in the media section of this site.

The Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) measures two pervasive, independent dimensions of personality, Extraversion-Introversion and Neuroticism-Stability, which account for most of the variance in the personality domain. Each form contains 57 “Yes-No” items with no repetition of items. The inclusion of a falsification scale provides for the detection of response distortion. The traits measured are Extraversion-Introversion and Neuroticism. When you fill out Eysenck’s Personality Inventory (EPI) you get three scores.

  • The ‘lie score’ is out of 9. It measures how socially desirable you are trying to be in your answers. Those who score 5 or more on this scale are probably trying to make themselves look good and are not being totally honest in their responses.
  • The ‘E score’ is out of 24 and measures how much of an extrovert you are.
  • The ‘N score’ is out of 24 and measures how neurotic you are.

To interpret the scores, your E score and your N score are plotted on a graph from which you can read your personality characteristics. The nearer the outside of the circle you are, the more marked are the personality traits. Please note that the EPI is a very simplistic type of personality measurement scale, so if you have come out as a personality that does not match what you thought before you took the test, you are probably right and the test is probably wrong!
