What is the ego?

Following the highly successful introduction to the ego on the “Beyond Belief” BBC 4 program, Dav Panesar expands on the sophisticated understanding of the nature of the ego and Consciousness, based on the profound teachings from Eastern psychology, especially Gurmat (consciousness based psychology).

Gurmat provides a comprehensive understanding of the mind, its functions, the conditioned sense of self (Ego) and consciousness. While the ego has a function and is necessary for everyday function, the ego does not define one as a human being, but the conditioned sense of self.

The Gurmat model proposes two kinds of self, namely the self or ego (the conditioned sense of self -hau, manmukh) and Awareness, as the loci “self”, (Gurmukh) .
